Clair Tang is a classical–contemporary crossover violinist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, active in both live performance and studio recording. Born in China, she began studying violin at the age of six and received rigorous classical training from an early age. During high school, she studied under Professor Zhang Chengye at the Nanjing University of the Arts, before earning her Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance from Xiamen University. During her second year of university, Clair interned with the Xiamen Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist, and following graduation, she continued performing with the orchestra in the second violin section. Alongside her orchestral work, she steadily expanded her musical language beyond the classical tradition. Building upon her classical foundation, Clair developed fluency across a wide range of contemporary and global music styles, including jazz, funk, rock, metal, hip-hop, electronic music, and world music.

By 2010, she had established herself as one of Xiamen’s leading contemporary violinists, performing both as a soloist and in collaboration with prominent East Asian artists such as jazz pianist Miao Zi, Taiwanese jazz saxophonist Cheng-Yu Lee, and Yu Hou Nan Li of Rock Records. She has also appeared on television programs and worked as a contracted session violinist for professional recording studios including MojoStone Recording Studio, Fang Yu Cheng Music Studio, and Shi Yin Guang Nian Recording Studio. Since 2006, Clair has taught violin, composition, and music theory to students ranging from early childhood to adulthood. In 2021, she relocated to Winnipeg, where she quickly became an active member of the local music community. She currently performs with and is a member of Mariachi Rio Rojo, River City Syncopators, Slow Train Home, Brazilian Tech Trio, and Tangled String Quartet, and collaborates extensively with musicians and ensembles across diverse genres, both on stage and in the recording studio. In addition to her performance career, Clair serves as Music Director of the Manitoba Hydro Choir. She teaches violin at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts and works with the Music Equals program, teaching fiddle and keyboard in public schools. Her work bridges classical discipline with improvisation, genre fusion, and contemporary musical expression.
